Background check process

All diocesan, parish and school employees must have a background check even if their duties do not include contact with minors. The background check must contain both a statewide and federal criminal records check. At present, the Diocese of Bismarck uses MYB, Inc. to do background checks. 

All diocesan, parish and school volunteers whose duties include contact with minors must have a background check. Do not order a background check from MYB, Inc. for an individual under the age of 18 as they do not have public court records. When working with children, volunteers under the age of 18 must be visually and physically accessible by an adult supervisor who has been background checked.

Background checks for active employees and volunteers must be renewed every 7 years.

1.  MYB - Criminal Records History Check Authorization (2 pages)


        a.  Applicant must complete both pages

        b.  Be sure all writing is CLEARLY LEGIBLE, and both pages are SIGNED AND DATED

        c.  Parish/School must FAX both pages to MYB or enter the request at the MYB website  
            Online applicant data entry is free, but faxing a form incurs a fee of
            $3.00 per applicant.

        d.  If faxing, each Parish/School must indicate their BILLING (CLIENT) CODE on the top
             of both pages. Contact Stephanie at 701-204-7213 if you need your location’s MYB

        f.  NO CREDIT CHECK is ever done as part of the Diocese of Bismarck MYB
             background check package. If the parish/school wants a credit check done on a
             specific applicant, it must be requested on the authorization form or online, and this
             page given to that applicant:

        g.  MYB background checks are good for 7 years and are transferrable between
             parishes and schools in the Bismarck Diocese. If your applicant thinks they may have
             had a background check at another parish or school in our diocese, please call
             Stephanie at 701-204-7213 to verify. Money can be saved if the applicant has a
             current background check from another location!

         h. Important: Parish/School must keep each applicant’s original MYB
             disclosure/authorization form on file for a minimum of 5 years

         i. Educators with a current ND teaching license are not subject to the MYB background check
            IF the parish/school has a current copy of the latest teaching license on file, and requests
            another copy as required due to expiration or granting of a lifetime license.
