Parish Demographic Statistics

Established December 31, 1909, the Diocese of Bismarck comprises 34,268 square miles in western North Dakota. The counties included in the diocese are Adams, Billings, Bowman, Burke, Burleigh, Divide, Dunn, Emmons, Golden Valley, Grant, Hettinger, McKenzie, McLean, Mercer, Morton, Mountrail, Oliver, Renville, Sioux, Slope, Stark, Ward and Williams counties.

The Diocese is divided into a total of five "deaneries," a territorial division required by canon law (c. 374).

Each of the deaneries is presided over by a vicar forane, or dean who is appointed by the bishop (local ordinary). The dean's responsibilites are to see that the clergy observe caonical and liturgical laws and follow instructions of the bishop, to summon deanery conferences and preside over them, and to make an annual report to the bishop.

A compilation of diocesan and deanery statistics has been developed to serve as base-line data for pastoral planning efforts. This page contains three different sets of tables: 1) a listing of parishes with their number of parishioners, number of households and the population of the cities and counties in which they are located for 2000 and 2007; 2) a listing of parishes with the number of parishioners, number of households, number of baptisms, deaths and weddings in 2006 as compared to 2008; 3) tables updated to reflect 2009 statistics compared to 2006..

The demographic data begins with the Population Table.
