Deacon Formation Program

Key characteristics of diaconal formation: 1) theological education, 2) pastoral focus and orientation, and 3) formation in Catholic spirituality integrating theology and pastoral ministry in a three-year cyclic preparation program.

Theological Formation: The purpose of theological formation is to provide the deacon candidate "with knowledge and appreciation of the faith he needs to carry out his ministry of the Word, Liturgy, and Service." (Guidelines #75). This will involve courses and workshops in key areas of Catholic theology: Scripture, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Church, Liturgy, Preaching, and Pastor Ministry.

Pastoral Formation: The program is pastoral in focus, but special practices and internships are designed to develop skills required for diaconal ministry, and includes areas of liturgy and preaching.

Spiritual Formation: This aspect of formation is a critical dimension and most important because its aim is to prepare the deacon candidate "in such a way that his life as the Church's minister forms an integrated whole of professional skills and personal commitment and devotion to Christ and the Church." (Guidelines, #90). Goals of spiritual formation are 1) discernment of vocation, 2) cultivation of commitment to Christ and the Church, 3) to deepen prayer life and knowledge of the Catholic spiritual tradition, and 4) to prepare the candidate for the challenges of diaconal spiritual leadership (Guidelines #95). In addition to the commitment to regular prayer and study of spirituality, he will be expected to have a spiritual director and participate in retreats and continuing education programs.
