Most parishes are also employers. As employers you have obligations and also receive, generate, and accumulate many documents. These begin with hiring documents, including job postings, employment applications, resumes, and reference checks and once a worker is employed, personnel files, wage and hour records, payroll records, and disciplinary files. At the conclusion of employment, there may be separation documents generated as well. As an employer you need to properly generate, draft, and retain quality professional records, before, during and after the employment relationship. Employers also need to understand that, due to laws such as HIPAA, some documents should not be kept in personnel files. Click title for document that provides guidance on what information should be retained in personnel files, and also what information should also be retained, but not in personnel files.
